WILTS Calne Town manager Steve Davis thinks that his side would be comfortably in the top half of the Wiltshire League Premier Division had his strongest squad been available to him on a regular basis.

Utilising one of his healthiest squads of the season so far, Davis saw his side claim a fine 1-0 victory against high-flying FC Chippenham Youth last weekend.

Calne’s Duncan McCann twice went close to finding the net for the visitors on Stanley Park’s artificial pitch but the decisive goal came midway through the first half when Jordon Dwyer seized on a loose backpass and released Ben Redford, who rounded the Chippenham goalkeeper and slotted home.

“A few months ago, we were turning up to games with the bare 11 or maybe just the one sub but on Saturday, I had a full strength squad of 15,” said Davis.

“Just like all reserve teams do, sometimes you lose two or three players to the first team on a Friday night or a Saturday morning.

“And sometimes you just have people missing through injuries or work commitments.

“I think that if I’d had my full squad available all season, we’d be in the top half of the table and not the bottom.

“It was a good win on Saturday. The normal pitch at Stanley Park gets water-logged and I spoke to Trippy (Nigel Tripp, FC Chippenham manager) because we wanted to get the game on, so we played on the 3G.

“Some of the lads hadn’t played on it before but once they got used to the bounce of the ball, they played really well.”

Elsewhere in the division, Trowbridge Wanderers moved up to fourth in the table with a 3-1 win at Shrewton United.

Devizes Town Reserves came out on the right end of a 4-3 thriller against Supermarine SportS, all other games in the league were postponed.

Vale of Pewsey were thrashed 4-0 by Sarum Youth whilst Melksham Town Reserves moved into the quarter-finals of the Senior KO Cup, beating Westbury United Reserves 2-1 in extra-time.
