SECOND Division Calne Eagles made it through to the quarter-final stages of the EJ Shanley & Sons-sponsored Spring Cup thanks to an 8-0 triumph over third division Zeals FC which earned them a place against Aces FC in the last eight.

The early exchanges were pretty tight, but once Calne playmaker Russell Driver opened the scoring after 15 minutes with a composed finish the result never really looked in doubt.

By half time Eagles had opened up a 3-0 lead thanks to another good strike from Russell Driver and Mickey Taraskevics, who continued his impressive start at his new club with his fifth goal in his first four games.

In the second half Zeals found it particularly tough playing into the wind and Calne really started to impose their dominance.

Veteran striker Brett Cullen lost his marker from a free kick to score his fifth goal since returning from injury in January. Karl Sharratt then scored direct from a corner kick to make the score 5-0 with 62 minutes gone.

Russell Driver completed his first hat-trick to make the score 6-0 and Karl Sharratt scored the best goal of the game with a superb free kick that cannoned into the net off the underside of the bar.

In closing stages things got even worse for Zeals when their captain Steve Wyatt was sent off for bringing down Eagles’ defender Lawrence Elliott when he was clean through on goal after a superb run from inside his own half.

Zeals’ misery was completed in the closing minutes when sub Jake Goodwin fired home from ten yards out the complete an 11-1 aggregate victory.

With a 4-0 advantage from last week's first leg encounter, second division Trowbridge Rangers did what was expected of them in their Spring Cup second leg meeting at home to Third division FC Trowbridge.

A 4-1 win earned them an 8-1 aggregate victory over their rivals which earned them a quarter-final tie away at either FC Box Steam Brewery or United FC.

With neither team being able to break the deadlock in the first half it was left to Mike Coll to do it in the second half, after his opener for Rangers, Will Jacomb, Ross Mather and Cameron Thomas added the other before Joe Bolano drilled home a stunner from 20 yards out to give the losers their consolation.

Third division The Stiffs were looking to overturn a 1-0 deficit from last week's first leg meeting against second division Trowbridge Wanderers Reserves and although a Chris Giles goal for Ade Giles side on 20 minutes leveled things up it wasn’t enough as Wanderers came from behind to claim a 4-1 win and a 5-1 aggregate success.

Mike Ritson’s diving header from a Connor Wordley cross restored parity on the day for Wanderers, but now with their noses back in front they were able to go on and assert their authority and they had extended their overall lead to 3-1 prior to half time, Steve Morris converting a Ritson free kick.

Wanderers extended their lead when Connor Wordley crossed for Ben Rogers to head home to make it 3-1 on the day.

Wordley was then fouled in the area, but Wanderers keeper Tom Bartlett fluffed his lines and hit the bar from the resulting penalty.

Will Bayley fired home a fourth for Wanderers again from another Wordley assist and that booked Matt Rusling’s Wanderers a quarter-final berth against either Melksham Town A or Heytesbury.

Third division FC Box Steam Brewery are still very much in their Spring Cup tie with second division United FC.

United will take a 3-2 lead into next week's second leg, but with the Brewery boys’ manager Phil Webb expecting to recall a number of his first choice players an upset could be on the cards.

Jason Povey put the Brewery boys’ ahead but they were pegged back with Shavon Allen making it one apiece.

Simon Parfitt regained the lead for Phil Webb’s side prior to half time. After the break United got themselves level for a second time, Radoslav Jakiel scoring a brilliant goal that made it two each.

United then had two goals disallowed before Jakiel scored his second of the afternoon to give United a slender lead into the return match.

The tie of the round brought together third division Melksham Town A and second division leaders Heytesbury with many people expecting the winners of the two legged contest to go on and be crowned Spring Cup winners.

A 3-0 victory for Melksham who like Heytesbury finished the game with 10 men after they had James Eatough sent off means that they hold all the aces ahead of the second leg meeting in two weeks time.

Following a unproductive first half the deadlock was broken on 64 minutes by Dan Moore whose 20-yard thunderbolt unlocked the Heytesbury defence.

After that Kieran Mills added a second and Dan Moore made it 3-0 for Barry Holloway’s side who are now huge favourites to win this tie and providing they do that the whole competition.

Brendan Hind was the villagers' player who saw red along with Eatough.
