AFTER taking all three points from their visit to Hilperton United, Chris Birleson’s Freshford United can break open the champagne and celebrate a successful defence of the Trowbridge and District League Division One title with two matches still to play.

A 7-3 victory for Freshford at Whaddon Lane means Birleson’s team can no longer be caught by North Bradley, who were the only side who could have denied them top spoy.

But with Bradley still in the mix for the runners up spot with Bradford United, their final game of the season away at Freshford could be just as big as the title-decider itself.

Freshford fell behind to a Dean Coles goal but quickly restored parity through Craig Brown, who was the beneficiary following good work between Dave Percival and Tom Rooney, who combined brilliantly to set Brown up for the equaliser.

Freshford went ahead when the unfortunate Adam Stevens turned a Ricky Trott cross into his own net.

Nick Ross extended Freshford’s lead to 3-1 thanks to another assist from Percival and a second from Ross, whose goal owed much to the effort of Brown, made it 4-1 before Percival provided his third assist of the afternoon, which resulted in Gavin Eyre firing home the goal of the game for 5-1.

Having scored two for Freshford, Ross then completed a hat-trick but unfortunately, his third of the game came at the wrong end and it gave Hilperton a glimmer of hope.

That glimmer quickly disappeared though when Tom Rooney scored Freshford’s sixth after more good work from Eyre.

The goals may have dried up in the second half but that didn’t matter to Freshford, who had already done enough in the first half to ensure the title was heading back to Brown’s Park for a second successive season.

The champions' seventh of the game came courtesy of second own goal from Stevens and it was Bradley King-Taylor who number three for Hilperton.
