WESTBURY United crashed to a heavy defeat in their final match of the season, which coupled with Portishead winning again, ensured they will finish bottom of the table.

However, with the Toolstation League only having 41 teams, United have been told that relegation is unlikely, with the decision likely to be confirmed at the league's AGM in June.

Oldland raced into a 2-0 lead through Paul Coles' double and although Westbury stopped the rot with some decent moves, Tony McElhone and Drew Adams could not hit the target from long range.

Frustration and a lack of discipline crept into the visitors' play and four players were cautioned, while Jordan Mathews was sent off for dissent late on.

The Abbots went 3-0 up through Ali Bamford’s skilful individual goal, and they scored again through Josh Dempsey 10 minutes from the end.

United’s consolation came from a fine move between substitutes Brett Partner and Joe Cavalla, with the latter producing a composed finish three minutes from time.

WESTBURY'S annual awards evening will be held on Saturday, June 6 from 7.30pm at Meadow Lane. Everyone is welcome to attend.

REMEDIAL work will take place at Meadow Lane throughout the summer.

The club are seeking volunteers to help out, with the first event on Saturday. Contact chairman Matt Bright on 07786 333300 for more information.

It is hoped the ground will be much-improved ahead of the likely pre-season friendly at home to reformed Salisbury FC in late July.
