FRESHFORD United began the defence of the Briken Motors & AM Print & Copy sponsored A&B Cup by turning in fine performance to beat fellow first division outfit Heytesbury 5-1.

The reigning champions made the perfect start and took the lead in the opening minute, when from the Heytesbury kick off, Dean Ranger won the ball and fed Jason Povey to fire home with only 44 seconds on the clock.

Midway through the half, Povey turned provider for Dave Percival to make it 2-0 and five minutes prior to half time another assist from Povey saw Ranger make it 3-0.

Heytesbury gave themselves a lifeline in the 53rd minute as Leigh Kennedy reduced the arrears, but Freshford restored their three-goal advantage nine minutes later when a long ball from keeper Chris Birlseon picked out Percival to net his second of the game before Povey completed the scoring after some good work from Jack Bristow. Calne Eagles also progressed into the second round after a penalty shootout win over Castle Combe, after a thrilling 3-3 draw. Despite being a division apart, the contest was given an extra edge with Calne were fielding five former Castle Combe players.

Calne were better team in the opening half and took a deserved lead into the break through a Danny Heap header.

Combe upped their game in the second period and saw Kez Nickless-Mooney level matters.

In extra time, as legs tired, the game opened up and Calne regained their lead when Mickey Taraskevics tucked away Brett Cullen’s through ball.

However, Combe restored parity two minutes later when centre back Alan Farnish scored from a corner kick.

With 10 minutes of extra-time remaining Karl Sharratt gave Calne a 3-2 lead, only for Quennan Tarawali curl home the equaliser with 30 seconds remaining.

In the shoot-out, Calne won 3-2 with the Eagles’ keeper Andy Windsor saving penalties from Martin Riddell and Quennan Tarawali, while Jake Nickless-Mooney was off target. Ned Edney, Adam Welch and Harry Ozut fired Calne through.

There was no upset at Little Marsh, as first division Semington Magpies cruised past second division basement side The Stiffs with a 7-1 win.

However, The Stiffs were still in the game at half-time after Chris Giles’ long range strike cancelled out Magpies’ Ashley Whitaker’s opener.

After the interval, Whitaker netted his second to give Magpies the lead before Dan Rimmer netted twice to make it 4-1.

Whitaker then completed his hat-trick before goals from Neil Grant and Paul Gittins completed the rout.

AFC Bradley and Trowbridge Wanderers Reserves’ dress-rehearsal for this weekend’s league meeting was settled by penalties.

Elliot Blanks fired Bradley into the lead after 15 minutes before Mark Maguire levelled matters five minutes later. And that is how the scoreline stayed until the end of extra-time to take the tie to penalties despite Bradley having Tim Richards sent off.

Elliot Hinton, Elliot Blanks, Dan Mercer and Joe Walker booked Bradley’s quarter-final spot with a 4-2 win in the shoot-out. The all-second division A&B Cup encounter between United FC and Westbury Town saw the latter cruise through with a resounding 9-1 win.

Westbury were 6-0 up at the interval courtesy of a Phil Hampson treble, two goals from Jack Hayward and a Scott Woolford single. United scored after the break through Lucasz Bareja but three quick-fire goals from Hayward, to complete his hat-trick, Joe Moloney and Owen Hunter made up the nine.

A 3-1 victory for Warminster Town Reserves saw them get the better of first division stable mates Potterne to book their spot in the final eight. Warminster led 3-0 at the break through goals from Kurt Hammonds, Craig Sheppard and Shaun Sheppard, while Potterne grabbed their consolation goal through an 87th minute penalty from Tom Lye.

A week after they suffered a 5-0 defeat at the hands of Hilperton United in the league, White Horse were looking to avenge that loss in the cup. After the two sides were locked at 1-1 following a 120 minutes of football, United won the shoo-out 4-3.

Paul Beavers gave White Horse the lead only for Marek Miztra to put through his only net and bring Hilperton level before half time.

Allan Clarke, Aaron Salter and Pete Ayton were successful from the spot for White Horse but missed penalties from Beavers and Porter proved costly as Bradley King-Taylor, Kieran Fereday, Craig Sheppard and Ryan Underwood took Hilperton to the next round.
