KIERAN Baggs hopes to be the Trowbridge Town boss that guides the Bees back up the regional non-league pyramid as the club make concerted moves to join the Toolstation Western League.

On the pitch, Baggs’ side stretched their unbeaten start in the Wiltshire League Senior Division to 11 matches on Saturday with a 6-0 triumph over Sarum Youth last Saturday that kept them a point behind leaders Shrewton United with three games in hand.

Off it, club chairman Ralph McCaldon is spearheading the push for Town to step back up a level, with negotiations over a longer-term lease of their Woodmarsh home - which would be the trigger for any elevation - ongoing.

McCaldon has overseen improvements to Town’s home facilities during his six years at the helm, with the re-fencing of the site the latest project.

Planning permission for floodlights is also in place, with the chairman now hoping the lease issue can be resolved with the town council, allowing the club to access the Football Foundation grants to help pay for them.

Any application to join the Toolstation League would need to be made by December 31 and the move would revive memories of the previous Trowbridge Town club, who were a Southern League side throughout the 1980s and 1990s before folding in 1998 after more than a century and being resurrected a year later in its current guise.

They have since played at Wiltshire League level, save for a six-year spell in the Hellenic League, but McCaldon said: “It (joining the Toolstation League) is what we’ve been building towards for the last six years since I’ve been chairman.

“We have a lot of things in place, but it all revolves around the renegotiation of the lease.

“You need a lease agreement of 25 years or more. The town council is the lease holder and we’re seeking to negotiate a 40 or 50 year one.

“Our target has always been to do things properly. We’ve got good support from both the Wiltshire and national FA and the Western League and it’s about getting those last few bits in place.’’ He added: “It’s in the balance. We’d like to have the lease sorted by Christmas but it could be that we have to look at some sort of ground-share. But whether it’s this season or next season, we’re determined to make things happen."

Manager Baggs said: “I’d like to see the club getting back up to a higher level and I’d really like to be the manager that helps them do it.

“We’ve seen a lot of other clubs locally doing well, people like Paul Shanley who was here and has gone on to do great things with Bradford Town.

“In the past we’ve lost players to a higher level and it would be great to see these players staying on with Trowbridge if we could get back up the leagues a bit."
