TROWBRIDGE Town manager Keiran Baggs is eyeing a lucrative tie with Salisbury City in the next round of the Wiltshire Senior Cup after downing Sydenhams League Division One outfit Downton.

The Wiltshire League side made light work of the Robins, who play a tier higher, as two first-half goals secured their passage into the quarter-finals.

Now Baggs is keen to take on the best supported team left in the competition in the form of Steve Claridge’s phoenix side, with the draw for the last eight being made on Monday.

“It is dependent on what way you want to look at it.

“If you want to avoid the big names before the semis or the final, or you look for that big tie early on,” said Baggs.

“Obviously the favourites are going to be up there with the Highworths and the Melkshams, just because of where they have been in the last couple of seasons and the level they play at.

“The Salisbury City tie would be the one I would love to get hold of - I wouldn’t mind it home or away.

“To have that sort of crowd for the lads and for it to be a big game and a massive one to be a part of.”

Dan King opened the scoring for the visitors before James Vincent doubled their advantage just prior the break to all but kill off Downton’s challenge.

Baggs gave praise to the Downton groundsman who was able to get the game on despite the torrential rain before the game.

“I thought the pitch was absolutely excellent, so fair play to their groundsmen because I think it was one of the only games that was on around here,” add the Trowbridge boss.

“We started a little bit slow for our liking, but after about 15 minutes we started to exploit in behind with our pace on the counter attack.

“Once our first goal went in we were completely in control and they never really looked like scoring until about 15 minutes from the end.

“After James Vincent scored the second before half-time I think the game was really over with and it was a case of not giving anything sloppy away.

“It was probably one of the most comfortable games you are going to see in the cup.”
