CORSHAM Town’s agonising wait for a first league victory since September rumbles on after they suffered last-gasp heartbreak at the hands of Ashton & Backwell United last weekend.

Before Christmas, Jeff Roberts’ team did claim the scalp of Highworth Town in the county cup but Corsham, who haven’t won in the Toolstation League First Division since September 29, are still searching for another three-point haul following their 3-2 loss at the Southbank on Saturday.

In an end-to-end start, both teams had opportunities to open their respective accounts, with Matt Jenkins and Levi Cox both going close for Corsham, whilst Mark Billingsley was forced into a handful of saves.

Roberts’ men took the lead with 30 minutes on the clock, Sam Ockwell firing home from close range after Luke Hall-Cousins’ header from a corner was blocked.

Corsham’s cause was helped further when United’s Sam Skidmore was sent off for a crunching mistimed tackle on Jenkins but two minutes into the second period, the 10 men were level as Ockwell was penalised for a foul in the box and Ryan Crouch levelled from the spot.

Three minutes’ later, Harry Walker put United 2-1 up but Leigh Rogers diverted Callum Elms’ shot into the net to restore parity.

But in the dying moments, home goalie Billingsley failed to hold onto Adey Harvey’s free-kick and Sam Thomas poked home the rebound to leave Corsham with that sinking feeling.
