WESTBURY United managed to bounce back from Saturday’s crushing 9-0 demolition at Hengrove Athletic with a morale-boosting 3-1 home win against Wincanton Town on Tuesday night.

United went into the break with a two-goal advantage at Meadow Lane following Dan Moore’s header in the 37th minute and George Bendle’s first Toolstation League goal just before the half-time whistle.

The home side then made it 3-0 when Sean Brereton latched onto a loose cross just past the hour mark, sliding into the net to put James Goddard’s men out of sight.

Wincanton were able to hit back but it was too little, too late by the time substitute Matt Peters denied United keeper Charlie Heydon a clean sheet late on.

“It was a really good result, especially after what happened to us last time when we had such a heavy defeat,” said Westbury boss Goddard.

“It was good to see the character in the lads for them to bounce back like that. We were a lot more clinical than we were on Saturday and we worked harder off the ball too. “I’m happy with our start. If someone would have offered me six points from the first couple of games, I would have taken it.

“It was just one of those games on Saturday. We were 3-0 down after the first half and then we came out and just fell to pieces.

“We felt we played well in the first half but you get games like that sometimes. There was no excuse for it to be nine but I’m glad we had the chance to play so soon after to put it right.” he added.

Westbury weren’t the only local side in midweek action this week as Warminster Town faced local rivals Corsham Town on Wednesday night.

It was Mark Breffit’s Warminster who came out on top, goals from Charlie Walton and Eben Mortimer-Taylor ensuring a 2-1 win despite a consolation goal from Corsham.

Mortimer-Taylor has made a great start to the season, with his goal against Corsham his second in as many matches.

He, alongside Louis Sparey and substitute Sam Clift, also got on the scoresheet in a 3-1 win over Chard Town on Saturday.

Corsham’s search for their first win of the season continues. Their loss to Warminster was the second on the spin as they slipped to a 1-0 defeat at home to Portishead Town last weekend.
