SHANE Hibbert fired a second-half hat-trick for Wroughton as they hit the summit in the Wiltshire League.

Heading into Saturday’s match at fellow title rivals Cricklade Town, four teams were locked on 37 points at the top of the table.

However, the Weir Field side, managed by Mark Love, now lead the way from Marlborough Town on goal difference.

At Cricklade Leisure Centre, the hosts, who had an early goal disallowed for offside, took the lead before the break.

But Wroughton, who lifted the title in 2008 after finishing runners-up the previous campaign, came out fighting in the second half, with former Fairford Town striker Hibbert helping himself to a fine treble.

Cricklade, who started the season like a freight train but have now slipped to fifth, pulled a goal back before having a man sent off for a rash tackle.

Wroughton assistant manager Paul Bowden said: “It was a great result for us. We have beaten Cricklade twice now, we beat them 2-1 at our place, and we deserved to win both matches.

“At the moment, there is a great feeling among this side and we have got a squad of 19 players that we are rotating to keep things fresh.

“Now we are top of the table, we know that we are there to be shot at, but we just have to keep doing what we are doing.

“We have brought in two new strikers in Shane and Aaron Maximen, who was with Highworth Town, and they have definitely added to team.

“But we also don’t concede many, we have only let in 16 goals in 15 matches and that is the best in the league.

“It would be great if we had the facilities to go to the next level but, unfortunately, we haven’t.

“The club won the league under Mark Love back in 2008 and it would be great if we could do it again.”

Marlborough could have found themselves on top of the pile but they could only beat league whipping boys Pewsey Vale Development, who had conceded 85 goals in 18 matches prior to Saturday, 2-1.

Previous leaders Shrewton United slipped to fourth following a 2-2 draw with Ludgershall Sports, while Melksham Town Reserves have climbed to third after they edged out Wilts Calne Town in a seven-goal thriller.
