WESTBURY United manager James Goddard admits his side were made to pay for not killing off Roman Glass St George in the first half, although he was not too disheartened by last Saturday’s 1-1 draw.

Martin Johnson gave United the lead early on but the visitors spurned more good chances in Bristol before Ken Oni struck in the second half to earn St George a point.

The draw follows Westbury’s 3-0 romp over Chard Town a week earlier and Goddard was pleased to turn in a second good display in a row.

“We went ahead quite early on and had a couple more chances after that. In the first half-hour, we were by far the better side,” said Goddard.

“On another day, we would have got at least one more goal and killed off the game but it wasn’t quite to be.

“In the second half, the conditions really deteriorated and visibility became quite poor.

“Another time, we might have seen the game called off after an hour but fair play to the referee; he wanted to get the game on, although after that, the game really did become quite scrappy and they managed to get a goal.

“To go away in this division is always tough and we’ve come away with a point, so that’s not too bad.

“I take positives from it. That’s actually the first game we have drawn this year and we’ve thrown away games that we have been winning in the past but this time, we didn’t do that.”

Elsewhere, there was disappointment for Warminster Town and Corsham Town as they were both beaten by the same heavy 3-0 scoreline.

Mark Breffit’s Warminster went down at home to Bishop Sutton, while Corsham endured a tough trip to league leaders Wellington.

Westbury will hope to fare better when they host the table-toppers this Saturday, while Corsham host Keynsham Town and Warminster entertain Cheddar.

Westbury boss Goddard added: “They are by far the best team we have played this year. They were excellent when we went down to their place early in the season.

“We know we are the underdogs and we go in not expecting much but we will do our best and hopefully we can get something.”
