MELKSHAM Town had to settle for a point as they threw away a three-goal lead to draw 3-3 away to mid-table side Wells City on Tuesday.

Darren Perrin’s side were in good form going into the game with three straight victories, scoring 11 and conceding just once.

And they got off to a flying start when Michael Perrott’s left-footed effort found the roof of the net three minutes in.

Melksham then doubled their lead 15 minutes later when Gary Higdon notched, to give his side a comfortable lead.

Higdon then added to his tally with his 24th goal of the season as Perrin’s troops held a three-goal advantage.

However, with just over five minutes of the half remaining, the hosts hit back with a goal of their own.

And before the first 45 minutes was through, Wells added a second after scoring from the spot to set up an interesting second period.

The second half wasn’t short of drama when the hosts managed to equalise five minutes before time, much to the anger of Perrin who was disappointed his side were unable to close the game out.

“It’s very frustrating. I am very disappointed because it was a golden opportunity and we have given away two needless points,” he said.

“We had the game wrapped up, the conditions were horrendous and it (the pitch) was barely playable. When we were 3-0 up it looked like we were going to win.

“We came out well in the second half but they had some good opportunities too. Their goalkeeper made an outstanding save from Ben Thomson’s free-kick.

“They always looked dangerous on the break and then they equalised through some shambolic defending.”

The result leaves Perrin’s outfit fourth in the Premier Division table, 10 points behind leaders, Bristol Manor Farm.

But the Melksham manager refused be drawn on the negatives too much as the result meant his team are now unbeaten in their last 13 league outings.

“We should have won, but in another view it keeps the unbeaten run going,” added Perrin. “At the end of the day we should have won the game comfortably but through complacency and poor defending we have been punished.”
