FROME Town boss Josh Jeffries was delighted to inflict a first home defeat of the season on Merthyr Town last weekend, with his side coming out 2-1 victors.

Defender Connor Roberts gave the visitors a half-time lead but despite warnings from Jeffries, the home side were able to restore parity 18 minutes in when Jack Compton ran through to beat Kyle Phillips.

The sides were only level briefly however, as Samuel Teale put Frome back in front four minutes later when he stabbed home a corner from close range.

“It was a great result down there,” said Jeffries, who saw his side’s trip to Cinderford Town postponed due to a waterlogged pitch on Tuesday night.

“They are unbeaten at their place and I’d be surprised if anyone else went down there and beat them, they are a good side.

“To go down there and get three points was unbelievable again really.

“I spoke to the players before the game and wanted the same from them as when we went to Slough (a 2-1 win in December).

“It was the same sort of situation. There was no pressure on us, nobody was expecting us to go down there and win, all the pressure was on them to try and sustain their play-off position and push for top spot.

“It was a nice position to be in, but knowing in the back of our minds that id we did perform, then we were in with a chance.

“I said at half-time, too many times this year, we have been good in the first half and then taken our foot off in the second.

“They got a goal, it was our own undoing after Kyle made a mistake but it was nice to respond so quickly.”

The win sees Jeffries side occupy seventh place in the Southern League Premier Division table, having lost just once in their last 14 outings.

However, with 10 points separating them and the play-off spots, the chance of promotion for a side who were tipped for the drop before a ball was kicked may be too much.

“It’s the highest points tally have ever got in the Southern League and we’ve still got 11 games to go,” added Jeffries.

“We were massive favourites to go down, we’ve had all the other stuff going on behind the scenes.

“I have said it so much now, I can’t applaud the lads any more than I have.

“The play-offs is not something I have looked at in such and I think it is incredible that we are even in a position to talk about it.

“We’ll keep doing what we are but we have lost one in 14 and we are still a way out.

“There’s not too much more the lads can do, the teams above keep churning out the results and it’s probably going to difficult.”
