MELKSHAM Town have booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Les Phillips Cup after beating county rivals Warminster Town 3-2.

Despite 32 places separating the two sides in the Toolstation Western Football League table, Melksham, who sit fourth in the Premier Division, were pushed all the way by the First Division outfit.

With Bradford Town not in action both they and Melksham remain fifth and fourth in the league standings, with bottom placed Sherbourne Town’s 3-1 defeat at home to Cadbury Heath the only league game to be played over the weekend.

It was a poor weekend for all of Wiltshire’s sides in the First Divison, as Devizes Town, Corsham Town and Calne Town all slipped to defeats.

The worst of the bunch was at Nursteed Road where Devizes were hammered 9-2 by bottom-of-the-league Almondsbury UWE.

A public apology was made on social media as Stuart Alexander helped himself to four goals for the visitors, with Jordan Yeo also netting a hat-trick to add to efforts from Jordan Davies and Ashley Knight, in what was described as a ‘shambolic performance’.

It wasn’t much better for Corsham Town as Almondsbury closed the gap to 10 points with a game in hand as Nigel Tripp, only reinstated as manager on Friday night, saw his side lose 5-2 at home to Chard Town.

Bradley Miles put the hosts ahead inside two minutes before James Boyland netted in the 20th minute for Chard.

Goals from Jonathan Bazley and Josh Bright kept the visitors in the contest, but Boyland’s second and strikes from Scott Jakeman and Scott Martin, all in the final 10 minutes, gave the scoreline a slightly lop-sided appearance.

Calne Town were unable to prepare for their Wiltshire Senior Cup semi-final with Southern League First Division South and West side Swindon Supermarine at Hardenhuish Park on Wednesday night with a win as they fell to a 2-1 defeat at home to Wincanton Town.

In Sydenhams Football League First Division, Pewsey Vale had the goalkeeping heroics of Richard Payne to thank as they put themselves within a point of second-from-bottom with a 2-2 draw at home to Folland Sports.

Michael Martin’s 10th minute free-kick put the hosts ahead before Callum Coker levelled just shy of half-hour mark.

Payner was called into action three minutes later when he saved his first penalty of the afternoon and after Cam Mackenzie cancelled out Coker’s second of the game after the break, it was Vale’s stopper who was the hero once more as he saved his second spot-kick of the game.

It was an afternoon to forget for Rich Hunter’s Royal Wootton Bassett Town side in the Hellenic League Premier Division on Saturday as they were humbled 5-1 away to Flackwell Heath.
