EARLIER this season, Bromham were considering their future in the Wiltshire Senior League but player-manager Dan Mercer is now looking to the future with some optimism.

The villagers, who have already completed all of this season’s home fixtures at the Jubilee Field, were newcomers this term but around the turn of the year, found themselves struggling to raise competitive sides.

However, after bringing in fresh recruits, they now find themselves a point behind 10th-placed Corsham Town Reserves, and notched their third win in four games last weekend.

After falling behind at bottom-of-the-table Pewsey Vale Development, player-boss Mercer headed his side level before the break and that set up Ryan Bole and Ashley Styles to strike in the second period to round-off a 3-1 triumph.

“To be honest, we were thinking of folding earlier in the season,” said Mercer. “At Christmas, we were finding things really hard with player availability.

“When we started, another guy was in charge, who said that he was bringing in a lot of players, but that never happened and we only had five signed on for the start of the season.

“It’s been tough but we’ve managed to bring in quite a few young lads.

“A lot of them have come from Bradford Town U18s or Trowbridge Wanderers. For a lot of them, it was their first time playing men’s football. They did find it hard with the physicality at first but they’re starting to get used to it and they’re doing well.

“Now I’m thinking more about moving up the table, rather than looking down. I’m looking forward to next season already.”

League leaders Wroughton bolstered their title chances with a 3-1 win over third-placed Marlborough Town.

They are five clear of Shrewton United, who were dispatched 2-0 by fifth-in-the-table Cricklade Town.

Trowbridge Town were thrashed 4-1 at Ludgershall Sports but Wilts Calne Town beat Malmesbury Victoria Development 3-1.

Corsham and Devizes Town Reserves shared a goalless draw.
