LUXOL St Andrews gained revenge for last season's A&B Cup Final defeat at the hands of Stockton & Codford with a 1-0 win in the 2018 Knockout Cup final at Westbury's Meadow Lane last night.

In what was at times a scrappy encounter that saw both teams cancel each other out and defences come out on top, it was Luxol who had the first sight of goal, Nick Taylor’s snap-shot on seven minutes just missing the target.

Next to try his luck was Stockton’s Justin Preece whose 25-yard dipping free kick dropped over the bar on 29 minutes.

Stockton’s keeper Tom Lucas reacted quickly to keep out his own defender's sliced clearance in the 35th minute and Tom Rooney was inches away from turning the ball home for Luxol prior to half-time, while at the other end Luxol keeper Lukasz Bareja did just enough to deny Jayson Stokes an opener.

Stockton started the second period the better of the two sides with Liam Gibbens and Sam Duffosee combining brilliantly before the later saw his shot turned around the post by the outstretched hand of keeper Bareja.

On 52 minutes Luxol were awarded a free kick 20 yards out and while everyone was expecting Mark Reynolds to have a pop at goal, his low effort caught everyone out as it deflected in off the unfortunate Laurence Bartley to give Luxol the lead.

Only a fine block from Jordan Gullis denied the villagers an equaliser on 60 minutes, but from the breakaway Luxol almost doubled their advantage with Ryan Bodman being denied by keeper Bareja.

Another fine block from Gullis thwarted Duffosee who then was a touch away from getting on the end of a Brendan Hind cross and levelling matters.

With the game entering the final 10 minutes, Stockton probably had their best spell which saw Reece Collyer’s rasping free kick seemingly heading for the top corner of the net before the flying Bareja superbly tipped it over the bar.

With almost the last kick of the game, Stockton had the chance to take it to extra time, but it wasn’t too be as Duffosee wasted a glorious chance when he blasted over the bar from 12 yards out.

Colin Kennerson presented Luxol’s winning captain Adam Potter with the Knockout Cup and Ashley Bodman, of Luxol, was awarded the Kevin Mounty Trophy for Man of the Match.
