MELKSHAM Town boss Kieran Baggs is reluctant to assume the mantle of favouritism for a runners-up finish in the Toolstation League Premier Division despite a stellar last seven days.

After last Thursday’s 1-0 win over Bridgwater Town, Melksham repeated the trick in Monday’s second-versus-third derby with Bradford Town and then added a 3-0 success at Cadbury Heath in Bristol on Wednesday evening.

Melksham are currently second, three points clear of Bradford with two games to play, but while fourth-placed Willand Rovers and fifth-placed Buckland Athletic are 10 and 18 points further adrift, they have three and six games in hand respectively, leaving the door ajar for one of them to come back into the frame.

“It’s still going to depend on what Willand do, really,’’ said Baggs, who saw first-half goals from Luke Ballinger, Jamie Lyons and Rob Hobbs get the job done at Cadbury Heath in midweek.

“I know they had a setback against Buckland (on Tuesday), but they still have games against us and Bradford to play.

“The good thing is that it is in our hands with the games left. We have got our points on the board and that’s a nice feeling leading up to Saturday (they host Wellington)."

He added: “Everyone can beat everyone in this league so we have to make sure we do the job we need to do.

“It’s nice to still be in the mix and if it comes to it that we finish second and get promoted that will be an amazing season for us.

“But even if it doesn’t happen and we finish below that, it will still have been a very good season.

Gary Higdon scored Melksham’s only goal on Monday as a rugged home defence prevented Bradford from scoring, with the Bobcats now travelling to another crunch clash at Willand on Saturday afternoon.

Baggs added: “If everyone stays focussed we can do it. We have huge games against Wellington and Willand coming up.”
