WESTBURY United joint manager Joe Kirkpatrick was ecstatic as his side clinched the Toolstation League Division One title with a dramatic 1-0 win over Devizes Town on Wednesday.

Dan Kovacs, who notched the winner in the 89th minute, was the hero as his goal sealed the victory, which put the hosts a point clear of second-place Roman Glass St George, who have already played all of their fixtures.

Kirkpatrick took over at Meadow Lane alongside his father, Neil Kirkpatrick, at the start of the season and has led them to the title with a haul of 94 points from 41 games, with one still to play.

“We are absolutely ecstatic to finally the season over the line as champions. The table doesn’t lie and we feel it’s thoroughly deserved because of how we have played this year,” said Kirkpatrick, who revealed the management team have already starting thinking about next term.

“We put so much hard work into this campaign with a long pre-season where we played eight pre-season friendlies and trained twice a week.

“The fitness of the boys really showed this year. It also helps when all of the boys are best mates playing for each other.

“We don’t get paid for what we do, the lads just to it for each other which makes our job on the sidelines a lot easier.

“We said at the beginning of the game it doesn’t matter if we score in the first minute or last, we just needed to be patient and we knew it was going to come.

“Although it was nice to clinch it with a dramatic late winner there isn’t much that can beat that feeling.

“We’ve already started to think about next season and we’ve not even finished this one. On and off the field we need to keep moving forward.

“With the players, management and all of the volunteers we have at the club I know we can do that.”

Elsewhere on Wednesday, Corsham Town followed up their 1-1 draw with Malmesbury Victoria on Saturday with a 1-0 home defeat to Portishead Town.

Bottom-of-the-league Warminster Town claimed a surprise victory as they were 4-3 winners at home to Keynsham Town.
