MELKSHAM Town Reserves boss Steve Burns admitted fine margins decided the Fountain Trophies Senior KO Cup final in his side’s favour on Saturday.

The Premier Division leaders clinched a 4-2 win over Cricklade Town at Corsham Town FC, to lift the silverware for a third time.

Town, whose senior team earned promotion to the Southern League last week, still retain a chance of making it a league and cup double, their Premier Division prospects boosted by nearest rivals Kintbury Rangers losing 3-2 to Westbury United Reserves.

Kintbury are a point behind with two games left, while Melksham have one match remaining and while the odds may be against his side adding the league crown, Burns was thrilled to lift the cup.

“It was a good game between two very good teams and I think we just slightly edged it,’’ he said.

“We probably deserved the win, but on another day it could have gone the other way.’’

Melksham trailed to a strike from Cricklade’s Tom McCulloch after 12 minutes, but two Luke Ballinger penalties turned the game on its head before half-time and a minute into the second period, Callum Demkiv made it 3-1.

McCulloch’s second kept Cricklade in touch and Melksham had Lee Fielding sent off with 10 minutes to go.

But the decisive moment arrived in the dying moments as a crashing effort from Cricklade’s Matty Bennett hit the underside of the bar, only for Melksham to break clear and substitute Tom Jones to wrap up the result with the fourth.

Two goals for Joe Maloney and an Ian Groves strike stunned Kintbury in league action as Westbury clinched victory, despite Alex Smith and Tom Mahoney replying, leaving Rangers needing four points from their final two games to make sure of the title.

Faringdon Memorial Cup winners Wroughton ended their season with a 2-2 draw against Pewsey Vale Development, Shane Hibbert taking his season’s tally to 33 with a double while Liam Edmondson and Ethan Fishlock replied.

Purton beat Devizes Town Reserves 4-1 with two goals from Rob Lincoln and strikes by Chris Avery and Mani Mesas, Martin Mitchell replying.

Ludgershall Sports beat Bassett Bulldogs 3-0, Dave King, Lewis Pickernell and Sam Walsh on target, while a last-minute Natti Morgan strike gave Trowbridge Town a 3-2 victory over Malmesbury Victoria Development.

Tom Caldicott and Dan Sandford also netted with Harrison Archer and Brett Gardiner on target for Vics.

Two goals from Christopher Deane earned Marlborough Town a 2-2 draw at Bremhill, for whom David Fedyk and Ash Alchin netted.
