ELLIE-J Webb continued her excellent start to the new season with a record-breaking victory in the opening Avon Track & Field League meeting in Yate, writes Kevin Fahey.

Just a week after launching her season with a personal best of 52.62m, which puts her fourth in the UK rankings, in the Yeovil Open, the 16-year-old Matravers School student from Westbury won the U17 women’s hammer with a throw of 49.95m.

That was one of two new league records set by Team Bath athletes. The other came from newcomer Ulas Akkus in the U15 boys 200m.

Akkus , who first emerged in Wiltshire schools athletics last season and represented the county at the South West Championships, smashed his best by 1.6secs to win the 200m in 23.5secs and go top of the South West rankings.

Another Wiltshire sprinter in good form was 16-year-old Will Kennedy from Westbury.

Kennedy, who is a student at Matravers School, did the double in the U17 men’s 100m (11.10secs) and 200m (224secs) both grade one times.

In her first competition of the season St Augustine’s School’s 18-year-old student Emily Dixon won the senior women’s 100m hurdles in a time of 14.9secs, while Box teenager Livia Gautlett won the U17 women’s 80 hurdles in a grade 2 time of 12.1secs.

Also in the senior women’s events, Trowbridge sprinter Abi Davies took maximum points in the 100m in a time of 12.7secs.

The Howorth brothers of Hilperton had their usual busy day with John and Robert sealing a one-two in the U15 boys’ 800m with 2mins 08.4secs and 2:08.8 respectively.

But arguably the star performance in the middle distances was a fine win by John of Gaunt pupil Caitlin Wosika in the U15 girls’ 1500m.

The 14-year-old smashed her personal best by more than 15 seconds as she broke five minutes for the first time with 4:58.8 to go second in the South West rankings.

  • AVON Valley Runners’ pair of Jackie Rockcliffe and Diane Hier were second and third respectively of the Wiltshire women’s finishers in Sunday’s Virgin London Marathon.

The duo finished behind former England international Amy Chalk, from Stanley, near Calne.

In the Virgin London Mini Marathon, Melksham Oak School’s William Stockley (Melksham Oak School) and Cameron Perkins (Hardenhuish) finished 16th and 19th respectively to help the Wiltshire U15 boys team finish eighth.
