Hilperton driver Dan Blake sealed the Carbon8 & Activa Consultants Hyundai Coupe Rookie Cup at Cadwell Park last weekend with two rookie wins.

The first of two races saw dry conditions and a rolling start which was new to the Coupe Cup races.

The outside line seemed to get the better start and Jon Winter got past Blake and Andy Melton pulled alongside into the fast left hander of Coppice but Blake was able to keep in front of the red car. Blake was unable to hang on to the back of the leading pack but early in the race pulled a 15 second gap to the battling pack behind consisting of Simon Dawson, Andy Melton, Vaughan Winter and Matthew Plumb.

It was a rather lonely race for Blake, who stabilised the gap to the group behind but made no impression on the faster group in front. However, at the end of the race, he passed the checkered flag in 5th place overall and took the Rookie Cup victory which was enough to seal the Rookie Cup for 2014.

Starting fifth in race two, Blake found himself in a battle for second place with three time championship winner Simon Miles, former Caterham racer Paul Manyweathers and series founder Jon Winter.

Blake inched ever closer to the cars in front but was unable to make a move. With Winter not eligible for the results it meant a fourth place.

Despite being a fourth place finish Blake’s performance was certainly an eye opener as he had been able to keep up with drivers who had many years and races more experience than himself.

He said: “It is a great feeling to win the Rookie Cup for 2014, that was my aim at the start of the season and I have worked hard to achieve it.

“Race two was really pleasing for me, I have not been able to race near Paul, Jon and Simon for most of the season, and they are so quick and have been racing for a lot longer than me.

“I can take real pride in the fact that I was able to stay so close to them and be a factor in the battle for second place.”

The fnal rounds of the season are at Oulton Park on October 4.

“I can go into Oulton Park next weekend now with no pressure on me and go out there and try and push that bit further so that next season I am able to be up with the front pack again,” he said.
