YOUNGSTERS named as the Wiltshire Times’ Stars of Tomorrow received a pep talk from Olympic star Tessa Sanderson last week.

Sanderson, who won gold in the javelin in Los Angeles in 1984, spoke via Skype to the audience at The Bear Hotel, Devizes, last Thursday as they gathered to find out the results of our competition in association with the Bag4Sport Foundation.

First prizes of £500 each went to archer Jade Pocock from Trowbridge and trampolinist Ria Oliver from Westbury.

Runners-up prizes of £100 each went to hockey umpire Ben Garrod and biathle champion Caitlin Wosika.

Pocock, 14, a pupil at John of Gaunt School, Trowbridge, only became interested in archery after going to watch her dad and decided to have a go.

She now trains six days a week and when she is not with her Bath Archers club shoots arrows in her garage at home.

She is hoping to make the British team for the Tokyo Olympics in 2020 and said: “All of the equipment is very expensive so I am very grateful to Bag4Sport Foundation for this grant.”

Oliver, 12, is already proving herself as an accomplished trampolinist having made her debut on the national circuit in 2012. She made her debut for Great Britain at the World Age Group Championships in Bulgaria last year.

She will use her money toward competitions and training camps.

Another competition was run with the Wiltshire Times’ sister paper, the Gazette & Herald and Bag4Sport director Andy Trusler said: “We are delighted to be able to support these talented youngsters.

“We know how much it costs their families to pay for kit, equipment and in travel costs.’’
