TROWBRIDGE bobsleigh starlet Abi Davies plans to treat her first-ever senior Great Britain call-up as a bonus after injury cruelly robbed her of the chance to slide for her country at the Europa Cup in Switzerland.

The 19-year-old was selected in the senior GB team for the sixth and seventh Europa Cup events in St Moritz but was left cursing her luck after a crash during her first day of pre-competition training on January 6 ruled her out of competing.

Davies, who is a student at Southampton Solent University, suffered heavy bone bruising in both of her feet and her misfortune was compounded by the fact that her international nod had come after a lengthy spell on the sidelines with a fractured knee last year.

“I went out to Switzerland before the Europa Cup and it happened on the first day of training. We had a crash at the end of the run and I took a lot of the impact on the foot pegs at the back,” said Davies.

“I was training with Vicky Olaoye, who’s one of the World Cup pilots, and she walked away absolutely fine – I took the brunt of it.

“I had my first MRI scans and X-ray in Switzerland and had a cast on my left foot and a splint on the other one.

“Now I’ve been to the RUH (Royal United Hospital) in Bath and my left foot, which is the one that’s worse, is in a boot - I haven’t broken anything but I’ve got some really heavy bone bruising.

“It’s really frustrating and I’m just thinking about getting back for the 2015-2016 winter season now.

“After my knee injury, I never expected to be competing this year anyway so I’m keeping my head up. Training will start in the summer and I’ve just got to think about getting better now.”
