THE Howorth brothers of Hilperton will probably create a little piece of Wiltshire history when they line up in county colours for the English Schools’ Championships in Blackburn tomorrow.

There are no definitive records for the half century that the event has been staged, but the chance that three boys from the same family – and all students at St Augustine’s Catholic College - have been selected at the same time seem fairly remote.

Reigning Wiltshire and South West champion Rory, aged 12, will make his debut in the juniors boys’ event while 14-year-old twins John and Robert compete in the inter boys’ age group.

“It will be lovely too see them all racing together for Wiltshire and I am sure I will feel very proud,” said mum Caroline.

“They are all really looking forward to the event and hoping for a good run.”

On form Rory, looks to have the best chance of impressing, despite some niggling injures that have cost him sharpness.

John and Robert will be making their third appearance for Wiltshire at the nationals, stepping up to the competitive inter boys’ age group for the first time.

Sisters Yasmin and Ariana Watling, 16 and 14 respectively, of St Mary’s School, Calne, represent Wiltshire in the inter girls’ race.

Sheldon School student Gemma Shepherd, 17 and from Yatesbury, made her debut as a junior girl in 2011 finishing 30th then improved to 22nd in 2012.

As an inter girl she came 11th and 31st and on form – she was sixth in the South West and in addition has finished 20th in the Midlands, 19th in the English National and last week 30th in the Inter Counties - and she runs in the senior girls’ race.

Melksham Oak’s Will Stockley made the podium at the England Indoor Championships recently and appears in the inter boys’ race.
