SEMLEY'S Lloyd Wallace made history on Sunday as the freestyle skier soared to Great Britain’s first-ever Europa Cup Aerials gold medal.

The surprise result for Wallace, 20, the Bath-based competitor, came at the Europa Cup in Airolo, Switzerland.

It was his first podium finish and the first British win ever at Europa Cup aerials.

Wallace nailed two huge aerial jumps and scored his personal best score of 96.58 for full double-full and 93.41 for double-full full. Both are triple twisting doubles somersaults.

The field was strong with World Cup jumpers from Switzerland, Russia, Belarus and USA.

Wallace said "I made a small mistake yesterday and was ninth but I knew I had it in me today. Everything went perfectly. It's the best feeling in the world."

Wallace is a Sports Performance student at University of Bath and will be looking for more success this week when he competes in two more Europa Cup competitions before heading to the World Junior Championships in Valmalenco, Italy.

It comes after a season of success on the World Cup tour with four top-20 places and 15th at the World Championships.

Wallace's sister Elodie, 17, also performed well, placing sixth in both events.
