ED MCKEEVER admitted he was "happy enough'' to claim bronze at the European Games in Azerbaijan this morning.

Olympic K1 200m champion McKeever, from Bradford on Avon, claimed Team GB's second medal of the Games but was beaten to the gold at Mingachevir by Hungary's Miklos Dudas while Petter Menning of Sweden took silver.

The 31-year-old edged over the line in 35.774 seconds – squeezing onto the podium by less than a tenth of a second following a tight race against a world-class field.

His medal followed Gordon Benson's triathlon gold for Team GB and McKeever said: “It’s always good to come away with a medal. It’s a pity it’s not a gold one but I’m happy enough with it.

“I haven’t see the race so I couldn’t say what happened and everything is a blur with spinning arms but I’ll go back now and look at the video footage.

“I’m very happy with it (my form and performance). It was a tough race and it was a few seconds longer than normal and maybe that played into the bigger guys’ hands just having that little bit more momentum going do the last bit.

“The conditions made it a little bit slower and a little bit longer. There was a little bit of a headwind or a slight flow made it slightly slower than it was yesterday.

“But I’m very happy with my form over the weekend and looking forward to going home and getting some work done over the next eight weeks looking forward to the World Championships.

“Eight weeks is enough time for two good blocks of training. I’ll sit down with my coach and work out what the strengths and weaknesses were and where we can improve to work out the best training plan going forwards to get that improvement.

“The event is very well organised and everyone is bending over backwards to help people.”
