DANNY Talbot faces a nervous wait by the telephone after he blew his final chance to guarantee selection for the World Championships in Beijing next month.

Running in front of a home crowd on the first night of this weekend’s Anniversary Games in London, the Trowbridge Tornado finished sixth in a world class 200m field.

His 20.56sec clocking was six-hundredths of a second outside the qualifying mark British Athletics has set for its World Championships squad.

With 20.30sec to his name after a race in Luzern, Switzerland on July 14 and a second-place in the British Championships, Talbot must cross his fingers.

“I just have to wait for Tuesday, hopefully get the call for the relay and the 200m, but it’s going to be an anxious few days,” he told the Wiltshire Times on Friday.

“I’ve been training very hard and the whole time we’ve planned to peak in late August for the World Championships.

“The difficulty with that, obviously, is qualification. Hopefully I’ve done enough to qualify and then I will be able to truly see where I am.”

The 24-year-old was one of a number of domestic talents to feel the warmth of the crowd inside the Olympic Stadium, which was battered with torrential rain all-night.

The former Team Bath sprint star began strongly, keeping pace with South Africa’s Anaso Jobodowana around the bend, before fading in the final 50 metres.

“I’m not overly pleased. I ran a lot faster 10 days ago and it was a similar lineup to that race. I was too far down compared to where I was 10 days ago,” he said.

“With the run I’m not overly pleased, but it’s nice to be out there and it’s the first time I’ve ever done a 200m on this track.”

“That’s (his start) what I’ve been working a lot on. We’ve been doing a lot of training and haven’t quite sharpened up how I wanted to yet.

“Hopefully I get a chance at Beijing because I know within the next month there will be a long time to sharpen up.

“I felt good going into it. I’ve had a few good days’ sleep. It’s hard to say, I would have to look back over it with my coach.

“In that sort of field, with the time I wanted I should’ve been closer to the front.”
