TOM Gale had already been enjoying a fine indoor season but it got considerably better with his selection to represent England for the first time this weekend.

The 17-year-old high jumper from Trowbridge, who is a student at the John of Gaunt School, was called up on Tuesday to make his international debut in the Celtic Cup Match in Cardiff on Sunday.

“Tom has had a really good indoor season so it is nice for him to get this recognition and be invited to represent his country for the first time,” said proud dad Mark Gale.

Gale’s call-up is a reward for improving his personal best to 2.05m, which has lifted him to second in the UK Rankings for under 20 men. He also won the South West Indoor title.

“Tom has worked very hard for this,” said coach Di Viles, who works with him at Team Bath AC.

“Much of the credit must go to Denis Doyle, who has been working with Tom and myself since the autumn.

“Denis is one of the country’s top coaches and Tom and I have learned so much from him. The experience will be great for Tom and I am delighted for him.”

Gale will link up with the England squad at the team hotel on Cardiff – collecting his kit in the process – and then head to the national indoor centre for the competition on Sunday.

Meanwhile, St Augustine’s Rory Howorth looked impressive in winning the county junior boys’ title but will need his best performance of the season to make the medal podium at the South West Cross Country Championships, in Cheltenham, tomorrow.

The John of Gaunt School’s Freddie Webb was a surprise winner of the county inter boys’ title while school colleague Caitlin Wosika heads the inter girls’ challenge and should improve upon her 20th last year.
