JAZZ Carlin clinched her second gold medal of the British Swimming Championships in Glasgow this evening as she powered her way to the women's 800m freestyle title.

Swindon's Carlin, who now lives in Bradford on Avon, clocked 8:27.49 for a comfortable victory at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre, following up on the 200m triumph she achieved on Tuesday.

The latest success will be tinged with a little disappointment however, the 25 year old University of Bath swimmer failing to dip below the 8:22.93 mark set down as the British Olympic qualifying time, while also being considerably slower than her personal best over the distance of 8:15.54.

Carlin said: "It's been tough. I've really put a lot of pressure on myself this week.

"Obviously missing out on London four years ao, I really wanted to come here and make the Olympic team so it's been a bit of a really tough week for me.

"But it's always good to race in Britain and obviously to come out on top is really nice.''

Retired Swindon swimmer Grant Turner, who like Carlin swam for Swindon's Tigersharks club, reckons his former clubmate can make a real impact at the Olympics

Turner, a pundit on British Swimming's live stream of the championships, said: "There's not doubt that if they (the selectors) do decide to take Jazz to the Olympics, she can be a real medal contender.

"She's done the job she could do on the day and it's fingers crossed now that she can go.

"I've known Jazz since I was a young lad and the grit that Jazz has got is unbelievable.

"Everyone wishes Jazz well and fingers crossed she can go and do a job in Rio.''
