AROUND 140 pupils from seven schools took part in the IV NACE Olympics at Stonar School last week.

Teams from Stonar’s partner NACE schools in France and Spain travelled to Wiltshire to compete, with the four-day event serving as a celebration of sporting endeavour.

The non-stop action included tournaments in athletics, football, tennis, basketball, swimming and hockey.

Stonar pupils held their own in the face of fierce competition and the junior girls’ team were overall winners of their category, with the senior girls tying for first place with Stonar’s sister schools, Agora International Madrid and Agora Sant Cugat.

The junior boys also acquitted themselves well, coming second in the swimming and third in the football.

Richard Miller, director of sport at Stonar, said: “This was a tremendous experience for our pupils who rose to the challenges admirably, both of the sports competitions, and of their duties as hosts.

“It was great to see the friendships developing through the week.”

Stonar headteacher Dr Sally Divall added: “At Stonar we are preparing pupils for life and work in a global world.

“The chance to take part in trips and events with our sister schools in Europe is a great opportunity for our pupils to work alongside those from other countries, building up friendships, language skills and confidence for the future.”

British skeleton racer Adam Pengilly, who competed at the 2006 and 2010 Winter Olympics, presented prizes at the closing ceremony.
