DANNY Talbot says the chance to run an individual event at the Rio Olympics has made his second Games selection even sweeter than the first.

The Trowbridge sprinter may have had the honour of making his debut at the world’s greatest sporting spectacle in front of a passionate home crowd at London 2012 but he reckons his berth in Brazil tops even that.

Four years ago, then 21-year-old Talbot had to make do with a place in the 4x100m relay squad but this time around, he will take to the start line in the 200m, after finishing second at the British Championships in late June.

Talbot reached the 200m semi-finals at last year’s World Championships in Beijing and cannot wait to go head-to-head with the globe’s greatest sprinters again this summer.

Talbot was in Amsterdam yesterday as the preliminaries in the 200m of the European Championships got under way.

“Making the team as an individual means everything to me,” said Talbot, now 25.

“Four years ago was amazing but at the same time, although watching the guys do the individual didn’t hurt me as I was so young and was quite naïve to it all, I knew that’s what I wanted to do.

“I am just so happy to be in the individual this time and now I can just work hard towards that. I know there is a lot I need to work on and hopefully over the next six weeks, I can do that.”

Talbot is also likely to be involved in the Team GB relay squad again in Rio and the former St Augustine’s pupil is confident they can be in the mix for the medals.

A British team containing Talbot were disqualified in the heats at London 2012 and failed to get the baton round altogether in the World Championship final 12 months ago.

However, with a whole host of British sprinters heading to Brazil in flying form, Talbot is sure they will be a force to be reckoned with should they get it right this time.

“We are going to come together and it’s going to be good,” said Talbot.

“In the past, it’s been a bit difficult and we haven’t got the medals we deserve but I am very confident in whatever four are out there, we will win medals.”
