TAKING a break from high-level competition, Rory Howorth enjoyed himself at the latest Youth Development League match in Newport on Sunday.

Representing Team Bath in the Midland League South West Division, the 14-year-old, from Hilperton, opened up with victory in the 1500m in 4mins 25.34secs – 15 seconds slower than when finishing fourth in the English Schools’ final the previous weekend - finishing 20 seconds clear of his nearest rival.

Howorth then demonstrated his all-round prowess with second places in the U5 boys’ high jump with 1.54m and in the javelin with a throw of 34.07m.

There was also victory for 14-year-old Trowbridge athlete Will Browne in the long jump with a leap of 5.45m, which is a season’s best and just five centimetres off the personal best he set last year.

Wiltshire champion Browne was also runner-up in the U15 boys’ 100m clocking a time of 12.00secs.

Eleanor Webster, from Alderton, near Malmesbury, raced to a personal best of 4mins 59.11secs to finish runner-up in the U15 girls’ 1500m and also earned maximum points in the long jump B event with a leap of 4.53m.

Phoebe Card won the U13 girls’ 75m in 10.61secs and was runner-up in the 150m with 21.00secs.

In the B events there were wins for Joseph Keane in the U15 boys’ 100m in 12.36secs and 200m in 25.72secs, Keelan Tucker in the U15 boys javelin (25.58m), Dominic Murray in the U13 boys’ high jump (PB of 1.30m), Eva Porter in the U15 girls’ 800m (2:36.51), Katie Robinson in the U15 girls’ 1500m (5:08.95) and Tabitha Gallen in the U15 girls’ 75m hurdles (12.51secs).

There was also a second place for rookie Joel Mattacks, of Southwick, in the U15 boys’ discs with a best throw of 10.59m.
