DANNY Talbot hopes his big race pedigree can come to the fore again at the Olympic Games.

The Trowbridge sprinter was a member of the 4x100m relay squad at London 2012 but has been selected to run an individual race for the first time at an Olympics in Rio when he contests the 200m.

Talbot has been able to produce his best when it has mattered most so far in 2016, claiming the top-two finish he needed at the British Championships to book his berth in Brazil before following that up with a podium place and a bronze medal at the European Championships.

Now with a chance of more honours on offer at the greatest sporting spectacle in the world, Talbot is eager to grab the opportunity with both hands “For me, there are only a couple of races that matter each year, that’s the British Championships and the major championship of the year, which this year is the Olympics,” said Talbot.

“And this year we were lucky enough to have another championships at the Europeans.

“I have come away with two medals already and if I am lucky enough to get into the final at the Olympics or even come away with another medal, I will be happy.

“At the moment I am competing in every race and picking up medals. Knowing that I can raise my game does give me a lot of confidence.”

As the countdown to the 200m heats on Tuesday, August 16 ticks ever closer, Talbot says that these are the moments he lives for as an athlete.

Although the 20-second barrier that elite sprinters are judged on these days has so far proved elusive, the former St Augustine’s pupil already has silverware to show for his career.

The competition is sure to be fierce in Rio as the fastest men on the planet all bid to write their names into Olympic folklore and Talbot concedes that it would be a dream come true to add another medal at the biggest event of all.

“We all train for championships, I don’t turn up to training every day just to be good in training. I do it so I can race well and ultimately, go to a championship and come home with medals,” said Talbot.

“That’s what I want from my career, I don’t want to look back and have fast times and nothing else.

“To go to championships and perform on the day, be very competitive and come back with a medal is a great feeling.”
