MEMBERS of Trowbridge’s Hot Chilli Triathlon Club were out in strength at the weekend at the 9BAR Chilly 10k and Duathlon at Castle Combe Race Circuit.

Competing in the duathlon event - two, two-mile runs sandwiching a 10-mile bike ride - Darren Phillips led home the Hot Chilli contingent in 54 minutes and 26 seconds, with Alex Laird also dipping underneath the hour mark with 59:43. Ian Hayman (63:32), James Crawford (64:47), and Fiona Johnston (76:37) also competed.

Richard Peters, from Bristol and West, briefly took the duathlon lead, but was soon hauled back by Ride 24/7’s Dave Roper and Team Truestart’s Brett Halliwell.

Roper was victorious with a time of 44:03, with Halliwell 20 seconds further back. Bradford on Avon’s Max Hazell was third.

The ladies race saw Katie Synge from Charnwood AC take a dominant win in 50:02, while Avon Valley Triathletes’ Anne-Marie Watson finished second – more than three minutes adrift.

The SPARX BUCS Chilly Duathlon saw more than 800 students take part.

In the men’s Elite race, Loughborough’s Rich Horton was first into T1 and out on the bike, followed by Luke Grenfell-Shaw (Durham Uni) and Chris Perham (Loughborough Uni).

Grenfell-Shaw produced a stunning bike split of 20:47 to lead heading into the second run. Horton took the lead with 400 metres remaining and won with a time of 41:40, with Grenfell-Shaw and Paul Kerr (University of Edinburgh) second and third.

In the ladies race, Pippa Woolven (University of Birmingham) clinched victory.

Avon Valley Runners’ Edward Knudsen headed home the 10k race in 33:39.

Hot Chilli members were also at the Bath Skyline 10k, with Nick Cranston (48.30), Scott Latham (49.55), Bobby James (51.27), Ben Blackwall (54.12), Ian Dobson (55.35), Jodie Maslen (63.41), Fiona Cassidy (65.10).

l CLARENDON College will host the Big T Triathlon on Monday, May 1 next year.

The event includes a sprint distance race (400m swim/25km bike/5km run), the Big T Enduro (600m swim/48km bike/10km run) and the Little T Aquathlon a series of junior Aquathlon races for all ages.
