WILTSHIRE slider Laura Deas recorded a top-10 finish at the Skeleton World Championships last weekend.

Deas, who lives in Melksham, finished 10th overall as her Team GB team-mate and reigning Olympic champion Lizzy Yarnold took home the bronze medal at Konigssee in Germany.

German world number one Jacqueline Loelling claimed the title on home ice, with compatriot and defending world champion Tina Hermann picking up silver.

Deas finished the first of the two-day competition down in 13th place, although that could have been much higher had her second run been allowed to count as she was actually second quickest in that weather-affected session.

The 28-year-old Welsh woman did not let that disappointment affect her, though, and she put two more solid runs together on the second day of competition to haul herself inside the top 10 by the conclusion.

Deas, who is currently ranked seventh in the world, told British Skeleton’s official website “I worked my way up from 13th to 10th and I’ve got to be happy with that.

“It was pretty tough overnight. I’ve had a few tough races this season where the weather hasn’t gone my way and I was hoping that this time around it would fall in my favour. I always want a race to be fair but I was really hoping I would climb some spots there.

“You can never take where you are for granted in a field like this and you’ve got to fight for every run. Maybe the risk after Friday was throwing in the towel but I’m really pleased I didn’t do that.”
