WILTSHIRE high-jumper Tom Gale has failed in his attempt to qualify for the high jump final at the Commonwealth Games.

Gale, who was involved in his first Commonwealth Games in Australia, was able to clear 2.18m but fell short of the mark, as he finished eighth in group A.

The teenager had targeted a podium finish before the event, but was unable to live up to expectation, as 13 athletes jumped higher than him, with heights of 2.21.

The youngster took to social media to express his disappointment.

He said:”Unfortunately I didn't make it through to the finals but had a great time anyway.

“Thank you so much to all those who supported me in getting to the games such as the Ron Pickering Fund, Active Wiltshire, Doing it for Dan and so many more.”

The final will now take place on Wednesday morning on the Gold Coast.
