WILTSHIRE swimmer Jazz Carlin opted not to compete in the 400m freestyle on the final day of action in the pool at the Commonwealth Games today.

The 27-year-old, who was chosen to be the flag bearer for Team Wales at last week’s opening ceremony ahead of the competition on the Gold Coast, finished a disappointing sixth in the 800m final on Monday.

Swindon's Carlin, who now lives in Bradford on Avon, had qualified as thy fourth fastest for that final, but trailed behind Australian trio Ariarne Titmus, Jessica Ashwood and Kiah Melverton, who completed a clean sweep of the medals for the host nation.

She was due back in the pool in the heats of the 400m in the early hours of Tuesday but instead opted to pull out of the event.

Team Wales have not provided a reason for her withdrawal today, or from the heats of the 200m, which took place on the opening day of the competition.

Carlin, who won gold in the 800m four years ago in Glasgow and claimed two silver medals at the 2016 Rio Olympics, has recently turned her attention to open water swimming, with the Tokyo Olympics in 2020 firmly in her sights.
