BOWLS:Treble for Clarrie

The ladies side began the sequence of victories over the Paulton-based club with a hard fought 85-73 win in the Yetton Trophy.

Then over last weekend in the space of 24 hours Clarrie men thumped Purnell 109-45 in the Denny Cup while the mixed team were equally impressive following up with an emphatic 115-54 success in the Egham Trophy.

Clarrie Dunbar ladies had to come from behind to claim a first round Yetton Trophy win over Purnell as they trailed across the board 42-31 after ten ends.

But they fought back to cancel the 11 shot deficit five ends later, lead 59-55 at 15 ends and then edge further away to an overall 85-73 victory.

Clarrie’s opening round Yetton Trophy success was built on a solid home performance by the two rinks skipped by Jeanette Hocking and Jo Dunford. The former beat C Shearing 32-10 while Dunford beat Jane Gullick 21-13.

Away in Paulton Wendy Ivory’s rink edged home 18-14 but Nesta Parfitt’s foursome crashed to a 34-14 loss against Ann Chivers.

In the next round on November 29 Clarrie will face Thornbury.

The men’s side had no such problems in their national inter-club Denny Cup match against Purnell cruising to a 109-45 success.

Two powerful home performances ensured that Clarrie dominated throughout with Andy Colebrooke’s rink recording a 45-1 win over R Underwood, while Keith Bailey’s four beat J Matthews 25-10.

However, it was a lot tighter away against Purnell with Fred Pope’s rink securing a 20-14 win over M Pratt while Dale Taylor’s quartet lost by one shot 19-20 against H Lorimer.

Bristol will be Clarrie’s third round opponents on November 17.

The treble over Purnell in national team competitions was completed on Sunday as the mixed side roared to an emphatic second round 115-54 win taking the honours on all four rinks.

At Clarrie Keith Bailey led his rink to a comprehensive 37-16 win over Dan Dart, while Russell Francis led his quartet to a 31-11 victory over E Symonds.

And to complete the rout Graham Shadwell’s rink won away 27-11 while Andy Colebrooke’s rink recorded a 20-11 success.

Clevedon who knocked-out North Wilts 87-80 will be Clarrie Dunbar’s next opponents on Sunday, November 25.

Christie Miller did not enjoy the same fortunes in national inter-club championship matches last week as they lost both their Yetton Trophy and Denny Plate matches.

The Miller Moonraker Ladies side found life tough against City of Bristol going down 91-63 in their first round Yetton tie.

However, they have a second chance as they move to the Yetton Plate competition and will face Clevedon in the first round on Thursday, November 29.

The men fared little better 48 hours later going down last Saturday 91-74 to MidGlos in the first round of the Denny Plate.

Christie kept matters tight at home with Andy Moore’s rink coming from behind to win by four shots while Brian Routledge’s quartet recovered from a poor start when trailing 12-2 after only five ends to only lose by five shots.

However, both rinks away were always behind. Paul Macdonald was 9-14 down at ten ends while Nigel Price’s quartet were struggling badly and trailed 3-21 at ten. They did recover to cut their deficit from 18 shots to only nine at 21 ends.

A RINK from the Christie Miller Indoor Club have been named in the Wiltshire men’s side to face Somerset in the first round of the Liberty Trophy, national inter-county championship, this coming Saturday (10am) at North Wilts.

The foursome are Dave Godwin, Nigel Price, Paul Macdonald and Andy Moore, the latter two both played in the Wiltshire county side last season against Somerset.

It will be a tough assignment for the Moonraker county as for the past two seasons Somerset have gone all the way in this competition but missed out on both occasions in the Liberty final.

Wiltshire will be seeking revenge for a heavy defeat last year at the hands of the cider county at North Wilts in round two.

The team selected by Wiltshire this time shows no fewer than 12 changes from the side that lost 132-90 last year to Somerset.

The Somerset side contains seven players who all play for Clarrie Dunbar and have Wiltshire connections.

They are Craig Doughty, Keith Bailey, Steve Wiltshire, Terry Perkins, Andy Colebrooke, Russell Francis and Graham Shadwell - the last four will all skip Somerset rinks.

TROWBRIDGE’S Graham Shadwell, who departs shortly to compete for England in the World Bowls Championships in Australia, has been honing his skills indoor.

Shadwell, a member of the Clarrie Dunbar Club indoors, has qualified for the Area 30 final in the Champion of Champions competition.

To reach the area final Shadwell has beaten Paul Macdonald (Christie Miller) 21-2 and followed that up with an equally impressive area semi-final 21-8 win over Colin Davis (Bristol).

Shadwell will face Clevedon’s John Hick in the champion of champions Area 30 final in the next few days.

Hick is an England outdoor international and starred with Shadwell in the gold medal winning England triples side in the Atlantic Rim Championships held last October in Paphos, Cyprus.
