BOWLS: Snook eyes nationals yet again
WAYNE Snook is one step away from qualifying for the final stages of the National U25 Singles Championship for the fifth consecutive year.
The 24-year North Wilts Indoor player, from Melksham, booked a place in the U25 inter-area final with a 2-0 success over Dale Taylor (Clarrie Dunbar) in the Area 30 junior singles final.
Snook took both sets in the final to clinch victory and extend his remarkable run in the competition going back five seasons to the 2008-09 season when he first beat Kyle Anderson (Westlecot), then in Area 16.
Snook, competing in the U25s for the last time this season, now moves forward to the inter-area final where he will play Area 29 champion Levi Hembrow (Taunton Deane) on Saturday on the neutral green at Donyatt, Ilminster.
Hembrow won the Area 29 U25 title with a 1.5-0.5 win over Sam Steel (Watchet).
England U25 triallist Snook will hope to reach the last 16 at City and County of Bristol Indoor Bowls Centre at the end of January (26-27).
Snook has enjoyed a fine run in the national U25 competition since he lost the 2007-08 Area 16 U25 final 2-1 to Anderson. He gained revenge the following year and also defeated Anderson (Westlecot) again in the 2009-10 final.
Then the areas were switched but it did not stop Snook who won the Area 30 U25 title in 2010-11 when beating Reece White (Bristol C&C) 2-0 and added a fourth title in a row with victory over Alex Shadwell (Clarrie Dunbar).
In the men’s national championships in Area 30, Snook has skipped a rink from North Wilts to reach the area fours semi-finals.
His foursome of Bob George, Steve Snook, Justin Davis and himself are set to meet Andy Moore (Christie Miller) by the end of the month.
And the two clubs will lock horns this Sunday as North Wilts and Christie Miller are due to meet in the fourth round of matches in the Central Region of the Wessex League.
