Wayne Snook
WAYNE Snook has qualified for the final stages of the National U25 Singles Championship for the fifth successive year, writes DAVE EATON.
The 23-year-old North Wilts indoor player, from Melksham, booked his place in the last 16 at the Bristol City and County IBC on January 26 with a hard-fought victory at Donyatt (Ilminster) last weekend.
Area 30 winner Snook saw off Area 29 champion Levi Hembrow (Taunton Deane) 1.5-0.5.
Snook made an impressive start and moved five shots clear as he led the first set 7-2 after five ends. However, Hembrow then hit back with counts of two and three to draw level at 7-7.
Undeterred, Snook scored singles on the 8th and 9th ends to win the set 9-7.
Like the first set Snook made a fine start and took a commanding early lead going 6-1 up after only four ends.
As in the previous set Hembrow then fought back but could not force a tie breaker as a single on the ninth and final end only brought him level at 7-7.
This meant Snook had won one set and drawn the other for a 1.5-0.5 win and a place in the last 16 at Bristol at the end of the month.
AFTER winning their opening two matches in this season’s Wessex League and topping the central region table North Wilts men have lost the next two.
Their latest reverse came in the local derby against Christie Miller (Melksham) last Sunday morning as they were beaten by 11 shots when going down 82-71.
Despite three of the four matches being tight affairs North Wilts only took the spoils on one of the four rinks and drew on another to only take three points out of a possible 16.
North Wilts lone success was gained by the away rink skipped by Matt Clark at Melksham that edged home by one shot while Wayne Snook’s quartet managed a 20-20 home draw at Westcroft.
RESULTS (skips only)
HOME: Wayne Snook drew with Paul Macdonald 20-20; Keith Fletcher lost to Nigel Price 16-25. AWAY: Matt Clark beat Andy Moore 20-19; Justin Davis lost to Brian Routledge 15-18.
Score: North Wilts lost to Christie Miller 71-82 and by 3pts to 13.
