RUGBY: A Barn-storming home effort
9:50am Friday 15th February 2013 in Sport News
CHIPPENHAM claimed their first win in three matches as they bounced back from a slow start at Allington Field.
The home side found themselves trailing 10-0 in the early stages as Barnstaple got off to a flying start.
Chippenham began to claw their way back into the game and were rewarded after 17 minutes through livewire scrum-half Lewis Surry, with Sam Saunders converting.
They levelled through a try by flanker Aaran Clark following a driving maul.
Barnstaple hit back, following a strike against the head only for Clark to add his second try, a replica of his first.
Saunders slotted a penalty to send the home side into the interval 18-15 to the good.
The second half started as the first ended with Chippenham dominating the forward exchanges.
Gary Champion crossed for a try, Saunders again converting.
The hosts’ leading try-getter Ryan Surry then added to his season’s tally to move clear of his brother in the scoring stakes.
Barnstaple hit back to reduce arrears to 32-20.
As the game opened up with Barnstaple chasing, Bobby Lyons crossed for the first of two tries from deep, with Saunders adding the extras.
Barnstaple scored another try to claim a bonus point, however Chippen-ham exploited Barnstaple as they chased the game with captain Lyons crossing for his second.
