EVO-STIK LEAGUE SOUTHERN PREMIER DIVISION: Redditch United 2 Frome Town 1
9:00am Monday 4th March 2013 in Sport News
FROME Town’s poor run of results continued as they lost out to an injury-time penalty at fellow strugglers Redditch.
The home side leapfrogged Darren Perrin's in the league table and left Frome one point off the relegation zone.
Frome welcomed loan signing Matt Clark into the squad from Salisbury, while former Plymouth youngster Jordan Copp was also included after impressing in the midweek defeat at Taunton Town.
Frome were without Dave Gilroy and the injured Tom Evans while Alex Lapham and Lewis Powell both faced fitness tests.
Both Josh Brigham and Mike Perrott missed out as they started their suspensions and Mike Reaney left the club on Thursday to join Paulton.
Frome started brightly and shots from Matt Smith and Dean Evans threatened the goal in the early stages, but then Redditch started to get the ball down and shoot from distance, with just a little more accuracy.
After 20 minutes, there was little to separate the sides, but then Redditch took the lead in the 34th minutes as Mark Cooper fouled on the edge of the Frome box, Jermaine Hylton swung the ball in and William Richards nodded home to make it 1-0.
Frome went close to an equaliser in the 51st minute as Evans set Copp free on the left, his shot was blocked well and the ball ricocheted to Luke Ballinger whose looping header was going in until a home defender just managed to hook the ball clear.
However the equaliser did come in the 55th minute as a free kick from the left was floatedin, the defence failed to clear Ricky Hulberts’ header and Dave Thompson headed home.
Frome then had a couple of attempts that missed that target and Redditch’s Connor Deards had a couple of long-range efforts that went wide.
But as the match entered injury time Redditch won it in the 91st minute as a striker was taken down in the area and Liam McDonald sent Darren Chitty the wrong way from the penalty spot.
The H&B Tyres Man of the Match award was awarded to Dean Flockton for an impressive display at the heart of the defence.
