CALOR LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION: Smith relief for Robins
10:00am Friday 23rd August 2013 in Sport News
DEREK Graham is breathing a sigh of relief that midfielder Matt Smith wasn’t seriously injured after crashing into a pitchside wall three minutes in to Frome Town’s defeat at Weymouth on Tuesday night.
The clash was delayed for around 20 minutes as Smith was treated before being taken to Dorchester hospital but the Robins man escaped with minor head and knee injuries.
“We spread the ball out wide in the third minute and Matt went to chase it, but there’s a bit of a slope going down from the pitch to the wall.
“Luckily, he slowed down a little but he was still going at a rate of knots and couldn’t stop,” said Robins manager Graham.
“He was knocked out and we were scared that he’d hurt his neck so we could only really put him in the recovery position but he was okay when we went to pick him up from the hospital later.
“His knee hit the wall too and was all swollen but he’s had a scan and luckily, there’s nothing wrong with it. His face is a bit swollen up too but hopefully he’ll be all right soon.
“It’s a shame because he’s one of our main men and he won’t be playing this weekend, but we’re lucky it wasn’t worse.”
Frome were also thrown off course by early injuries to Ben Thomson and Jonny Crowley, with the hosts taking the lead through Sam Poole’s late first-half header.
Stewart Letton poked home Weymouth’s second of the evening after Robins new-boy Johnny Lynn was caught in possession.
On Saturday, Frome kicked off the new Calor League Premier Division season with a goalless draw at home to Cambridge City.
Luke Ballinger twice went close to finding the net for Graham’s men, as well as smacking a free-kick against the crossbar in the 54th minute.
At the other end, Will Lowton struck the woodwork for Cambridge.
As well as the injured Smith, Frome are also set to be without winger Thomson, defender Crowley and midfielder Kurt Hammonds for tomorrow’s trip to Burnham and Saturday’s derby clash with Chippenham Town.
Gianni Kapika and Martin Johnson come in to the squad.
