RUGBY: Attwood injury could disrupt England hopes
BATH lock Dave Attwood’s hopes of a starting spot for England in the upcoming Autumn international series could be under threat from the rib injury he suffered in Saturday’s win over London Irish.
Attwood was named skipper for the clash against the Exiles, but lasted just five minutes of the 33-18 triumph before being replaced by club captain Stuart Hooper.
The former Gloucester man, 26, was Bath’s players’ player of last season and also excelled on England’s summer tour of Argentina before being named in England coach Stuart Lancaster’s elite player squad at the start of the season where he is expected to challenge the likes of Leicester’s British Lions star Geoff Parling, Wasps’ Joe Launchbury and Northampton’s Courtney Lawes for a start.
Coach Mike Ford revealed today that Attwood’s injury was likely to keep him out of action for two to three weeks, not only ruling him out of Friday’s Aviva Premiership trip to Sale, but also Amlin Challenge Cup appointments with Bordeaux-Begles and Newport Gwent Dragons later this month.
Bath face Attwood’s former club Gloucester in the Aviva Premiership on October 25, but that’s just eight days before England host Australia in the first of three November Tests.
Ford said: "We're still not sure what the prognosis is (on Attwood) but it's two or three weeks really and he won't play Friday.
“The injury for him is unfortunate for timing because Stuart (Lancaster) will be looking at these next games.
He’s got three games to probably make his mind up (on his England side) and I think Dave will be struggling to make them.’’
Fellow lock Dominic Day is also set to miss the trip to Sale with a twisted ankle, as is threequarter Matt Banahan, whose ankle knock is not thought to be serious.
Full-back Anthony Watson will also sit out the game against the Sharks with a tight hamstring.
Ford added: "We've got a few out really, so it's not great.''
