LEAGUE leaders West Wilts suffered a shock last weekend as they slipped to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of basement side Yeovil and Sherborne 2.

The West Clubs League East Division title-chasers began well, but Yeovil held firm and took the lead with a well-worked break-away goal.

Wilts came close when Amanda Robson’s effort struck the post, but the visitors held a 1-0 lead going in to half-time.

The home side pushed for a way back into the match in the second half, but the Yeovil defence worked tirelessly to keep them out.

And the suckerpunch came as the visitors scored their second of the afternoon from a short corner.

Livvie Evans did strike to reduce the deficit but it wasn’t enough to prevent Wilts slipping to a second defeat of the season.

Meanwhile, West Wilts 2nd were unable to pull away from the bottom of the Wessex Division One table as they were held to a 1-1 draw at home by bottom-of-the-pile Swindon 2.

The hosts put their opponents on the back foot from the start with their attacking intent, with Lauren Trim and Sally Douthwaite helping to produce several great chances with their driving runs down the wings.

Their efforts were finally rewarded after an initial shot from Zoe Symes was saved by the keeper, with rebound pounced on by Douthwaite, who slotted home confidently.

But the home side’s lead was shortlived as, with their first meaningful attack of the match, the visitors converted to level the scores.

Wilts thirds closed the gap on second-from-bottom Wootton Bassett 3 to a point as they held Frome 2 to a goalless draw.
