DANNY Talbot scorched to a superb personal best over 100m in Florida at the weekend to leap to equal second in the UK rankings, writes KEVIN FAHEY.

In only his second outdoor meeting of the year, albeit in the beautiful Florida sunshine so conducive to sprinting fast times, the 22-year-old Trowbridge Tornado flew to a time of 10.17secs which clipped 0.04secs off his three-year-old best .

Only James Ellington (10.13secs), who beat Talbot in in Saturday’s NTC/PURE Athletics Spring Invitational in Clermont, has gone quicker and while the likes of specialist 100m men James Dasaolu, Dwain Chambers and Adam Gemili have yet to emerge that time will give Talbot a huge boost in confidence.

“Yeah the weekend went really well, especially in the 100m with the PB,” said Talbot. “The race was technically really good and I just felt fast on the day so was able to run a good time.”

In contrast there was a sense of disappointment with his specialist 200m even though his time of 20.48secs, running into a headwind, was just 0.03secs off his PB.

“The 200 was the opposite really and just didn't really run how I wanted to,” added Talbot.

“I just tried to force it a bit too much to try to win. So considering the way I ran and that I was still so close to my best it is really encouraging.

“Hopefully I can run the 200m correctly then a really fast time could come. All in all, the trip has been amazing and loved every second of it!”

Coach Dan Cossins agrees it was Talbot’s worst technical 200m since the Olympic trials two years ago so bearing that in mind both men are relishing his next outing at the distance in the Cayman Islands on Wednesday (May 7).

“We are positive that Danny can go to the Cayman Islands and run much faster,” said Cossins.
