SKIPPER Simon Orchard thinks Winsley’s up and coming players will help the villagers avoid another campaign in the lower reaches of the Wiltshire Division.

Winsley, who finished second-from-bottom last season, notched up their first win of the summer last weekend with a narrow six-wicket win at Purton.

Jeremy Smith and Orchard both took three wickets to prevent their newly-promoted opponents from chasing down their total of 182 and the Winsley captain is backing his team to get stronger as the season progresses.

“We got promoted a couple of seasons ago but then got relegated straight back down and lost a few players because of that – last season was a disappointing one,” said Orchard.

“But we’ve got a very good youth system and a lot of players who are doing well in the second team.

“I think as the year goes on, you’ll see a lot more new names coming in to the first team and making good contributions. I don’t think that we’re going to struggle again.”

Smith (46) and Robbie Cross (33) both put runs on the board for Winsley, who were put in to bat first, but Purton’s Tom Bowler (5-47) and Tobias Bowler (3-30) piled on the pressure as the visitors were skittled after 41 overs.

But opener Sam Pinchin (32) was the only home batsman to make a real impact as Smith’s 3-22 and Orchard’s 3-26 had the visitors all out for 176 at the end of the 40th over.

Elsewhere, Trowbridge suffered a 66-run defeat at home to Marlborough.

Alex Hart’s side restricted eight of Marlborough’s order to less than ten runs but Dylan Bennie and Tom Norris hit 105 and 85 respectively as the visitors posted 245-8.

Sam Julyan (65) and Wes Marshall (50) offered some resistance but Trowbridge were skittled for 179 in the final over.
