MATRAVERS School student William Kennedy scorched to a superb sprint double at the South West Schools’ Track & Field Championships in Yeovil, writes Kevin Fahey.

The Westbury teenager won the inter boys’ 100m and 200m events clocking 11.01secs and 22.11secs respectively, both national standards, to ensure his place in the Wiltshire team for the English Championships next month.

He was joined by 15 other Wiltshire gold medallists at the regional event.

One of the other top performers on the day was Dauntsey’s Nikko Hunt, who set a new championship record of 4.31m to win the inter boys’ pole vault. It added one centimetre to the previous mark.

Emerging star Ulas Akkus, of Sheldon School, made his mark by sprinting to victory in the junior boys’ 200m and adding silver in the 100m.

In the sprint hurdles Devizes School’s Sophie Hay struck gold in the senior girls’ 100m while England Schools’ international Grace Davies-Redmond of St Laurence School, Bradford on Avon, won the inter girls’ 300m hurdles.

In the middle distances Melksham Oak’s Will Stockley was a class apart in the inter boys’ 1500m and there was further success for Sheldon School’s Gemma Shepherd in the inter girls’ 1500m and St Mary’s, Calne, teenager Yasmin Watling in the inter girls’ 3000m.

In the throws Devizes School’s Emily Hutchinson looked impressive in winning the senior girls’ shot and Grace Chambers cleared 1.63m to win the junior girls’ high jump.

Wiltshire athletes also won 12 silvers and seven bronzes in an impressive 36-medal haul.
