TROWBRIDGE needed a late conversion from veteran Lloyd Davis to squeeze a narrow victory against spirited visitors.

But coach Steve Ojomoh will have taken heart from his side’s refusal to give up despite going repeatedly behind in a close game.

The visitors opened the scoring when fly half Harry Carr’s jinked through several tackles to score under the posts, making it an easy conversion for Henry Day.

The hosts responded minutes later when a Davis clearance was misjudged by Grove full back Huw Lewis, allowing Joe Knight and Tom Weaver to run in behind the Grove’s defence. Weaver went over to score and Davis converted to make it 7-7.

Trowbridge were briefly in front thanks to a Davis penalty but a try from Grove centre Day and a successful conversion from Harry Carr made it 14-10 to the away side.

The hosts followed up with two penalty goals from Davis to put Trowbridge back in front 16-14 at the break.

Grove’s full back Huw Lewis opened the second half scoring with a try that number ten Harry Carr converted putting the visitors in front again by 21-16.

But Trowbridge levelled again with a good try from new boy James McLauchlan.

Davis missed the conversion and Grove replacement Simon Cramp scored a try to make it 21-26.

With the hosts now putting the Grove defence under pressure with scrum after scrum on their line something had to give and a great try from wing forward Barry Coombs eventually put Trowbridge level again.

Davis added the conversion to make it 28-26.

Still Grove has chance to snatch victory in the last moments after a penalty was pushed back a further ten yards for indiscipline from the home pack.

But the kick went wide giving a much needed win for Trowbridge.
