MANAGER Steve Burns reckons Melksham Town Reserves’ new standing at the summit of the Wiltshire League Premier Division is a ‘false position’ but is nonetheless chuffed to see his charges top the table.

Melksham are riding high, thanks in no small part to their sensational eight-game unbeaten run, which has seen Burns’ near-impregnable side play over 720 minutes of football without conceding a goal.

The Conigre men’s latest triumph was a 4-0 victory at Wootton Bassett Town Development last weekend, with midfielder Will Stead netting a brace whilst Emilio Menghini and Sean Fordham were also on the scoresheet.

“We’re at the top of the table now but I think that it’s a bit of a false position because a lot of the other teams have games in hand,” said Burns, whose team have only let in two goals all season.

“Obviously, it’s been really enjoyable and the thing for us now is to just try and maintain it as long as we can.

“I think we’ve just benefitted from having a settled side, especially in the defence. We’ve got a team where the majority are from Melksham and a lot of our guys have played together for the last three or four years, so they all know each other.

“On Saturday, we took our foot off the gas a little bit and could have scored a lot more. Wootton Bassett were never in the game to be honest.”

Elsewhere, bottom-of-the table Pewsey Vale finally notched up their first win of the season with a 1-0 win at local rivals Devizes Town Reserves, with Dan Reynolds netting the only goal.

Corsham Town Reserves notched up their second successive win as they beat Westbury United Reserves 2-0.

In the Wiltshire Senior Cup, Malmesbury Victoria lost 3-2 in extra time to Wootton Bassett Town’s Hellenic League side and FC Chippenham Youth went down 4-1 at Amesbury Town.

Marlborough Town were edged 1-0 by Purton and Wilts Calne Town lost 3-1 to Trowbridge Town.
